For the very first time, I sang an English song. I had always believed I could sing well. But to sing in English? Hmm, I wasn’t so sure about that. As a new student learning English, I was really excited to discover many new vocabularies. I learned my first English words through the song “I Have a Dream.”
Before junior high school, my previous school didn’t really teach us how to speak English properly. So when I entered junior high, I was amazed to meet classmates who could speak English fluently. It motivated me to learn more.
In my second year, we had an exam to perform an international song. I chose “I Have a Dream” by Westlife. At first, I picked it just because it was easy to memorize. The lyrics repeat a lot, haha! My sister was a huge fan of Backstreet Boys and Westlife, and she always filled her phone with their songs, so I was already familiar with it.
But I never imagined that one day I would understand the real meaning of the song. When I looked up the lyrics’ translation, I realized how powerful and inspiring it was. From that moment, I couldn’t stop singing it. Not only because of its beautiful message, but also because I felt proud that I could memorize and sing it well. And of course, I wanted to show off to my mother that I could speak English very well!
Since then, this song has become a special part of my life. A reminder of how far I’ve come in learning and believing in myself. Every time I hear “I Have a Dream” playing somewhere, I smile. It takes me back to that little girl who dared to sing in a new language, full of excitement, curiosity, and dreams waiting to grow.
